Futari Splash Star, 2nd Stream: Saki discovers the world of rare books thanks to Mai's big brother...the hard way and in a desperate sort of fashion; Mai's family takes Saki and her little sister Minori on a picnic...after a lesson in advanced astronomy that has nothing to do with food or greenery; Dark Fall retainer Goyan forces Karehan into using his trump card, mostly since if he didn't he'd be our general for the rest of the series; and Saki and Mai discovers nothing can ruin a really dark, solemn incident regarding the relation of siblings...than a new Dark Fall general who wants to speak Spanish every other word.

Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star: Ep. 5: What Will Kenta do?! Saki and the Cute Older Brother!

I can seriously see Karehan as anti-e-book with his promotion of used book stores.

The situation of having Mai around is something that has lead to changes for Saki as much as for her partner, whether it is for the better or worse for elements. For one thing, Mai brings with her an older brother who is about as smart as everyone in the family (but in the more "general sciences" compared to Mai's art, her mom's archaeology and dad's astronomy) and of course ends up leading to a possible "Fuji-P" situation for Saki. But unlike Nagisa, there is actually a boy already in Saki's life that really isn't a fan of this sudden turn of events: Kenta Hoshino, her partner in crime she hangs out with alongside the softball team. He isn't a fan of having Saki with another guy and sort of sees Saki as someone he can be with despite all that's going on. Unfortunately some of what he brings to the table is merely trouble, particularly when he accidentally drops tea on a book that Saki borrowed from Kazuya Mishou that she more or less does to try and impress hiim. Saki obviously tries to find a way to replace it, but Kenta is forced to join in as well considering that it was his tea despite the irresponsibility that Mai's partner had in putting it in a situation as such. Amazingly despite the problems (including another Karehan/Uzaina attack), it all ends up working out in the end since Kazuya's philosophy is "unless the book is unreadable, then there's nothing really wrong with it." (that and he had it memorized due to having read it too many times) I do like the idea of the potential of an actual love triangle in the series with things set up as is and two possible male interests for Saki...because let's face it, after Nagisa's two season longing of Fuji-P, having something like this actually could work to the season's advantage.

Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star: Ep. 6: They're the Best After All! Cool Fathers!!

I get carbo-loading but they better not have eaten all the bread before the picnic...besides, there would be crumbs all over the car.

One thing Saki keeps seeming like she's clinging to is this whole idea that Mai's family is just better than her family in every way. We saw it last time with her brother Kazuya, and this time we get it from her astronomer father, the one who built an observatory in his own home to look at the stars and do his research. By comparison, Saki's own father is rather plain, more or less spending all his time running the family bakery, making sure that the food turns out alright and not giving enough time to have fun with his daughters (yeah, the brat Minori included). Amazingly the whole problem that Saki has is that she doesn't really have the perspective of what her father does, as ordinary as it sounds; particularly when Mr. Mishou admits that he is probably the best breadmaker around and that everything he does is to keep things small and personal. He has the opportunity to sell out and go into something fancier or bigger if he had the chance, but he chooses to just keep running Pan-Paka-Pan, seeing that his expertise is probably of better use in a small shop that people can come to instead of just selling out to something bigger and more famous. It sort of reminds me a little bit of the situation with Tsubomi's father back in Heartcatch, though slightly different: in that case, her father was a college researcher in flowers and just scaled back to a simple flower shop in order to have the time for his daughter; the world keeps trying to pull him back in but he refuses to give up his principals and the greater chance of free time to be a father instead of just someone who knows a lot and can make the world a better place. Mr. Hyuuga probably isn't quite the same but the element does remind me a bit on that behalf; despite the perks of being famous and being good at what he does, he probably would lose the time he already has with Saki and Minori if he went bigger; despite the little time he does have for his daughters, he's still sort of there for them in this way and he at least can keep the pride of just making really good bread for people who come to the shop.

In other story elements, the fairies seem to reveal a bit more about the Land of Fountains (being that it's the only time Choppi even wants to be around Flappi so at least it gives him that perk), with the idea that the six other fountains were stolen and that the Fountain of the Sun is currently hidden away to be protected; the question as to where...I have ideas but I don't want to be spoiled. On the other hand, Karehan basically got his final chance and failed it; and despite Goyan's annoyance, he is right about one thing: Akudaikan isn't going to let him live after this...so whatever he has to do after this latest failure, he has to figure it out fast.

Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star: Ep. 7: Ultra-Serious! The Wrath of Karehan

With the way they were holding it in, I'm surprised Flappi and Choppi weren't having other...biological problems.

We've been hearing over and over that Karehan has a plan in order to deal with the Cures and to avoid the wrath of Akudaikan (and Goyan...mostly Goyan because he's about as annoying as a retainer can be), and of course regardless of the failures, he keeps getting more chances. But of course today happens to be the day that he finally decides to release his ultimate plan, the one that will make him go all out and stop the Cures once and for all. And the plan is...um...merging with an Uzaina. It's not a bad plan (it sort of reminds me of a certain phase of DokiDoki), though the more important thing here is that the empowered Uzaina that Karehan controls is powerful enough to suck up spiritual power, thus to eliminate the problem with the Cures in a way that actually could be effective. Of course, it isn't like Saki and Mai aren't just going to ignore any of this, particularly with their own concerns, which in this case is basically our "search" for the next Cure doo-dad for the season. In this case, it's the "Fairy Carafe", a water pitcher that both stores Fairy Drops and, more importantly, has the power to reawaken the fountains previously destroyed by Dark Fall in the past. In order to get to it, they have to still defeat Karehan; they do mostly due to their own strength but in sort of the typical "Cure believe in yourself" moment that sort of feels more like a later season than just dealing with the enemy like back in Futari. Amazingly when the Uzaina is stopped, it also ends up destroying Karehan due to overexerting his power, at least finally dealing with him while at the same time getting the Carafe and finishing the fixing of the first of the other fountains that isn't the Fountain of the Sun. It's cliche but it works for where the series is at the moment.

Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star: Ep. 8: I Love You! Minori and the Two Big Sisters

For a Cure duo trying to save fountains, this season really likes spilling liquids everywhere.

What does it mean to be a big sister; and what does it mean if being a big sister ends up making one go too far in how one should be a big sister? Saki is a big sister considering that she has Minori to look after and take care of, but her means of how to deal with her is something that is constantly a trial and error, with moments that may even get under Mai's own skin...mostly because of her own experiences being a little sister like Minori! When Minori ends up spilling some juice on Mai's latest drawing (which she was probably going to turn into a painting anyway so it wasn't like it was that bad off), Saki sort of goes off the deep end, punishing her thinking that it was for her betterment. It doesn't go well with Mai mostly because...well, being a little sister herself, she sort of more commiserates with Minori and thus getting this much harsh punishment from a big sister isn't something she can take sitting down. It sort of just gets really moody from here, with Saki wondering if she went too far and having trouble talking to Mai, while Mai just wonders if she went too far in getting upset at Saki, all while Minori is just crying due to how harsh her big sister treated her. It's rather heavy...thus we end up getting it resolved with the introduction of our new Dark Fall general, the flamboyant flame-weilding Moerumamba. Because of the fight, Saki and Mai's Spiritual Power is off due to needing unity; it sort of works in the same way as "Harmony Power" from Suite, but just sort of comes out of nowhere considering they didn't mention before that the spiritual power that they use is just as much based on the teamwork as it is on their own manipulation ability; of course when they make up it all works out in the end, all while everyone apologizes to Minori and Saki and her finally act llike sisters again. I want to like this episode but sort of have a hard time due to the sudden moodiness and everyone blowing up over nothing especially considering we just had a similar situation with the book Mai's brother had..yeah there it also involved one of Saki's classmates, but I think they shouldn't have just done a similar element so quickly.
